    Description
In 1809 Napoleon Bonaparte booted Ferdinand VII here off the throne of Spain, put him in jail, and sat the crown on the head of his own brother, Joseph. This displeased most of Spain's Colonies in America, both North and South.
    In the case of the
    "Viceroyalty of Peru"
    , it led to a
    "Declaration of Independence"
by José de San Martin on July 28, 1821. But Peru was the stronghold of Spanish Royalist power in South America and fighting continued until the
    "Battle of Ayacucho"
on December 9, 1824, this year, guaranteed Peruvian Independence.
This coin was struck in 1824 at Cuzco.
This was only year coins were struck at Cuzco.
All other Peruvian Royal coinage was minted at Lima. This was produced under the Spanish
    "Viceroy of Peru"
José de la Serna, who had retreated from Lima to Cuzco. Shortly after this coin was struck, he was wounded and captured at Ayacucho and the
    "Viceroyalty of Peru"
ended, but later de la Serna was allowed to return to Spain.
    Weight: 27.48 Gram, 41 Millimeter, .896 Silver.

Ferdinand here had a rocky reign. When Joseph fled Spain as Wellington was taking it away from the falling Napoleon. Ferdinand climbed back on the throne, but by then, 1813, the damage had been done in the Americas and the revolts continued. Another revolt, this time in 1820 in Spain itself saw Ferdinand taken prisoner. His captivity lasted until 1823 when he was freed by the French and once again, for the last time, he climbed back on the throne. This time he stayed on it and took bloody revenge, until his death in 1833.

    The Coin:
A pleasant example, actually nicer than the one pictured in the catalog and that specimen is also holed. As these soon became obsolete and were melted, we can probably thank whoever put the hole in it to use as something else than money for its continued existence. It shows wear so it saw some hands. It may have been very lightly cleaned at some time but if so, it was long ago as it is a pleasing medium gray. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
