Notes from the interweb:
When the Little King goes hunting in Africa, he takes along his servants, his throne and even a taxicab! The fat little monarch encounters a tree that becomes a serpent and
a pelican who turns into Jimmy Durante
. Lost in cannibal country, he also meets some very hungry cannibals who plan to eat him with French fries. The king is captured and set to boil in a pot, but the chef serves the shoes first. Eating the shoes causes the natives to blow up into round balloons. They chase the Little King, but he pops them with a safety pin and their own spears. Plenty of bouncy music and a unique animation style. The Little King starred in 10 cartoons at Van Beuren Studios between 1933-1934.
The early sound cartoons that came out of New York have an indescribable quality that is sorely missing from animation today. The best way I can describe it is "cartoon candy". New York cartoons are gritty, unpredictable and outrageous with jazzy music forming the foundation for the action. There are no pretentions to be anything other than cartoony joy. This cartoon is no exception.
