Painting the Clouds with Sunshine is a musical adaptation of the 1919 play The Gold Diggers by Avery Hopwood. It is the fourth film adaptation of the play, after The Gold Diggers (1923), Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933). The film is a jukebox musical, featuring popular songs from the 1910s to 1930s, including two songs from Gold Diggers of Broadway ("Painting the Clouds with Sunshine" and "Tiptoe Through the Tulips") and one song from Gold Diggers of 1933 ("We're in the Money"). The actual working title of the film was Gold Diggers of 1951, but it was decided that since it had been so long since the last Gold Diggers film has been released, (thirteen years), audiences wouldn't remember the series.
Painting the Clouds with Sunshine is a fun musical. The songs are entertaining and the characters are fun. Wallace Ford is in a non-singing role of a rough western cowboy. S.Z. Cuddles Sakall runs a hotel and is equally hilarious and adorable. Then there is Tom Conway —brother of George Sanders — who brings some comedy and also a third romantic partner for the female singing trio.
Lucille Norman is possibly a name you aren’t familiar with. Norman was a professional singer and only appeared in a few films.
You may not recognize the name Virginia Gibson either, but you know her as one of the seven brides in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” Gibson is a trained dancer and is shown off to good advantage.
Virginia Mayo is delightful as always in this film. Her character’s a little brassy and upfront with everyone, including the men who are trying to woo her friends.
Painting the Clouds with Sunshine is pure entertainment.
